Video DEEL 1                                    Video DEEL 2

The musical memories of Michael Downing regarding RNI in 1974

Since "I saw the light" in the summer of 1972, RNI had been a supporter of Todd Rundgren and, at the beginning of 1974, Leo van der Goot both had "Hello it's me" as his kanskaart and featured an album track, "Sons of 1984", regularly on Driemaster.

Another US act that had been very popular on RNI was the Doobie Brothers and, by the end of January 1974, the third single from "The captain and me", "Natural Thing" was picking up significant airplay on RNI, becoming Treiterschijf on 26 January 1974. Whilst it made the Super Top 50, it was not as successful as "Long train running" or "China Grove".

"Dream kid" by the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver was one of the favourites of the International service in the early part of 1974, becoming Smash Play on 18 January 1974. It made no. 12 on the Toppers 20, but was not a hit in the UK or Holland. However, the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver would have a big hit two years later with "Arms of Mary".

"Give me just another day" by the Four Miracles was well played on RNI in January 1974, but was not a hit.

Chi Coltrane was very popular in the last 18 months of RNI's life, but "Whoever told you" was not a hit, despite being both a Treiterschijf and a Smash Play.

Barry White's "Never never gonna give you up" spent most of February 1974 as one of RNI's most played records, as was "You're sixteen" by Ringo Starr.

One of the records most associated with RNI in 1974 was "West Virginia" by Cape Canary, which was the Treiterschijf in the week commencing 13 April 1974. Despite its popularity on RNI, it made only no. 40 on the Super Top 50.

Ferry Maat's Soul Show was a weekly feature on RNI in 1974 and two Dutch soul records were successful in the summer. "Angel eyes" by American Gypsy was Treiterschijf in the week commencing 18 May 1974 and made no. 8 in the Super Top 50 and "Tonight" by Tony Sherman spent four weeks in the Troef 20 before entering the Super Top 50 at no. 46, climbing to no. 40, falling back to no. 46 and then climbing into the Top 10, with no. 9 as its highest position in August 1974.

"I love you" by Larry Cotton was another RNI favourite from the summer of 1974 and was Treiterschijf in the week commencing 1 June 1974.

Chicago was another US group that was popular on RNI in 1974. "I've been searching so long", a Technici kanskaart, made only no. 12 on the Troef 20 in May 1974, but the album from which it came, "Chicago VII", was LP van de Week on 30 March 1974 and the second single, "Call on me", made no. 47 in the Super Top 50 for two weeks in August 1974, having been Ferry Maat's kanskaart.

Another minor Super Top 50 hit in August 1974 was a version of "Will you still love me tomorrow" by Dump, which did not even make the Tipparade on Radio Veronica.

The International service had a number of Smash Plays that are all but forgotten now, among them "Johnny B Goode" by Jet (12 April), "Sweet was my Rose" by Velvet Glove (26 April), "Dirty work" by Ian Matthews (21 June) and "After the show" by Kevin Ayers (2 August), but there was one very noteworthy success amongst the Smash Plays, which was "This town ain't big enough for both of us" by Sparks, which was Smash Play in the week commencing 5 April 1974 and became a Top 10 hit in both the UK and Holland.

The International service also supported Dutch hits, with both "Love of life" by Earth and Fire and "Wintertime" by Kayak being Smash Plays in the summer. Neither of them was a hit in the UK, unfortunately.

However, the most played record on RNI in 1974 - and in every year of its life - was the final Treiterschijf in the week commencing 24 August 1974. The RNI theme tune, "Man of action" by the Les Reed Orchestra, was reissued to mark the end of RNI and kept the station's memory alive by becoming a Top 10 hit in Holland in the autumn of 1974.
