The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this period

At the beginning of September 1970 RNI was getting back to normal after the events of Saturday 29 August. At last the station was free of jamming and had a wavelength (220m) that seemed to provide decent reception. However, as ever with RNI in 1970, things changed quickly. On Saturday 5 September, Andy Archer announced his resignation from RNI and broadcast his final programme. The story was that he thought he was going to be sacked, but that was not the case, so when that became clear Andy changed his mind and returned to the station.

The Top 30 show on Sunday 6 September 1970 was presented by Mark Wesley from 12.00 to 15.00 and, although Andy Archer had broadcast his farewell show on the previous day, he appeared in the recorded "In Concert" programme at 16.00 on that day.

One DJ that had left by the beginning of September 1970 was David Gregory, who had only joined RNI in July. He was replaced in early September by Mike Ross, who went on to become one of only two DJs who broadcast on RNI in all of the five years of its operations (1970 to 1974). The other was Rob Eden, who was due to return to the Mebo 2 after a time on board in August, but did not make it back before the close down on 24 September 1970. Dave Rogers, another mainstay of RNI in 1971 and 1972, did make it out to the Mebo 2 a few days before the close down, but would return in February 1971.

Apart from those already mentioned the DJ team in September 1970 included Carl Mitchell, Alan West, Michael Lindsay, Spangles Muldoon and Stephen Ladd. Larry Tremaine also broadcast from time to time as the Geeter with the Heater.

In September 1970 there were the first World Service programmes on 23 September, including the first edition of Nordsee goes DX, so maybe I should include A J Beirens in the list of presenters who broadcast in every year from 1970 to 1974.

In the early part of September 1970 it looked as if RNI might finally be putting its troubles behind it, but it didn't last long. In the evening of 23 September came the announcement that the station was to close at 11.00 on the following day. It would then be four months before we heard any transmissions from RNI and, when it returned properly in February 1971, only Alan West and Dave Rogers would be there from the team on 24 September 1970.
