The RNI memories
of Michael Downing for this period After the Conservative Party had won the election
on 18 June 1970, we were hopeful that the jamming signal on RNI's medium wave
signal would be lifted, but it was not to be. Instead, the Mebo 2 moved from the coast of England back to the coast
of Holland in the week commencing 19 July 1970 and, when transmissions
resumed on 244 metres on 24 July 1970, fortunately
the jamming did not recommence. At this time the DJ team consisted of
Andy Archer, Alan West, Carl Mitchell, Mark Wesley, Michael Lindsay, Spangles
Muldoon, David Gregory, John Denny (who had just joined) and Axel on the
German service, although the German service was soon to be discontinued. It was good to hear RNI on medium wave
without jamming. Andy Archer presented the Top 30 show on Sunday 26 July
1970, which was broadcast from 12.00 to 15.00 each Sunday. The chart was
based on the UK Top 30, although there were a number of records that never
made the UK chart and even the occasional Dutch hit that was not even issued
in the UK, such as "Wild and exciting" by Earth and Fire, which had
made it up to number 2 in RNI's Top 30 by Sunday 20 September 1970, the last
chart before RNI closed down, temporarily, on Thursday 24 September 1970. Between the end of July 1970 and the closedown,
both David Gregory and John Denny would leave RNI and Stephen Ladd, Mike Ross
and Dave Rogers would join. Rob Eden also presented some programmes
and was due to return to the Mebo 2, but RNI closed
before he was able to do so. Andy Archer announced his resignation and
presented a farewell show on Saturday 5 September 1970, but he changed his
mind and was soon back. The major event of the summer of 1970,
though, was the attempted hijacking of the Mebo 2
by Kees Manders on
Saturday 29 August, when Spangles Muldoon, Andy Archer, Alan West, Carl
Mitchell, Michael Lindsay and Mark Wesley all appeared on the programme appealing for help and for listeners to call
RNI's offices in Zurich. Fortunately the raid was unsuccessful and RNI was
not troubled by Kees Manders
again. Earlier in August 1970, RNI had moved
from 244 metres to 220 metres,
which was to remain their medium wave frequency until the final closedown on
31 August 1974. When the decision was taken to close on
24 September 1970, it was clearly a shock to the DJs, who had just started a
World Service on shortwave on 23 September. But luckily RNI did not close for
good, being back on the air (initially with non-stop tests) at the end of
January 1971. |
