Forever and ever van Demis Roussos is deze week de hoogste nieuwe op nummer 21. De treiterschijf van vorige week komt binnen op nummer 32 : Batteringram van Mouth & McNeal. Mooie Nederpop komt binnen op 31 : Don’t be down van Amsterdam. Down by the lazy river.

The RNI memories of Michael Downing for March 1973

At the beginning of the previous week, there was a choice of three offshore stations to listen to - Radio Veronica, RNI and Radio Caroline. But, when I woke up on Tuesday 3 April 1973, there was only silence from the North Sea. Radio Caroline had gone off the air at about 7.30 on Monday 26 March 1973, so it was no surprise that there was no signal from the Mi Amigo, but what had happened to Veronica and RNI? By listening to the news on Hilversum 1 or 2 I learned that there had been one of the fiercest storms in memory on the North Sea the previous evening - a Force 12 - and that the Norderney was now on Scheveningen beach, having broken its anchor chain in the storm. There was no news of RNI, but no broadcasts either.

It was not until about 13.30 that RNI started its transmissions on Tuesday 3 April 1973, when Hans ten Hooge opened up the station and presented a live programme with Marc van Amstel, instead of the usual taped programmes with Tony Berk and Ferry Maat. The Mebo 2 had taken a battering in the storm, but the ship, the transmitters and everybody on board was OK, so programmes slowly returned to normal.

Until 11 April 1973, however, RNI was the only station broadcasting from the North Sea, whilst Veronica sorted out its arrangement to broadcast from the Mi Amigo until the Norderney could be refloated and returned to its former position. So it's likely that RNI got a lot of additional listeners in that week.

What was on RNI that week? The Dutch service, once it was back to normal on Wednesday 4 April 1973, had Marc van Amstel on Buitengaats from 6.00 to 9.00 followed by an hour non-stop in Branding, Peter Holland from 10.00 to 12.00, Tony Berk from 12.00 to 14.00, Ferry Maat from 14.00 to 16.00, Leo van der Goot on Driemaster live from 16.00 to 18,00 and then Nico Steenbergen from 18.00 to 20.00.

The International service had Donny Osmond's "Twelfth of Never" at no. 1 that week. Mike Ross had presented the Top 30 show on Friday 30 March 1973. Graham Gill, also on board that week, had an interesting hitpick that week - "Solitaire" by the Searchers. This was not a hit, but a later version of the same Neil Sedaka song was a big hit in the UK for Andy Williams at the end of 1973, after being an RNI Smash Play. At the bottom of the International Top 30 there was a new entry at no. 27 for "Brown baby" by Billy Paul, which was not a UK hit, but was played a lot on RNI at the time.

Around this time, Marc van Amstel started playing a record called "Tu te reconnaitras" by Anne-Marie David, which was representing Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday 7 April 1973. Marc said that he thought that it could win and he was right. By the middle of the month it was the most played record on both RNI and Veronica as one of the few records that was both the Treiterschijf and the Alarmschijf.
