The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this week in May 1973 The Dutch service
of RNI was in a very stable period at the end of May 1973, with no DJs
leaving until November 1973. The weekday programme
schedule was: 6.00 Buitengaats
(Gerard Smit or Marc van Amstel
live from the Mebo 2) 9.00 Branding (mostly non-stop, at this time
presented by Nico Steenbergen) 10.00 Peter Holland
(Doorsnee Noordzee) 12.00 Tony Berk (Berk in uitvoering) 14.00 Ferry Maat (Herrie met Ferry) 16.00 Driemaster (Leo van
der Goot or Dick de Graaf live from the Mebo 2) 18.00 - 20.00 Nico Steenbergen (De Avond
Toestand) At the weekend
there was a sport programme from 10.00 to 12.00 on
Saturday, presented by Nico Steenbergen,
followed by the Super Top 50 from 12.00 to 15.00 with Ferry Maat and the Troef 20 was
featured in Driemaster. Leo van der
Goot presented the Troef
20 on 26 May 1973, as he was in his week of Driemaster,
although he went off on shore leave on Tuesday 29 May 1973 and Dick de Graaf returned to the Mebo 2
and took over for his week of Driemaster. On Sunday 27 May
1973 there was a programme presented by Sjef van Oekel in the
afternoon. Buitengaats was presented by Marc van Amstel in this week, who took over from Gerard Smit who had presented the programme
in the previous week, up to Friday 25 May 1973. On the
International service, the DJs on board on 26 May 1973 were Mike Ross, Brian
McKenzie and Graham Gill. One of the specialist programmes
at the time was the Hitback Show from 20.00 to
22.00 on Sunday evening and this was usually presented at this time by Mike
Ross with his wife Sheila, either live from board or
recorded. This was followed from 22.00 to 24.00 by the RNI Request Show with
Graham Gill. The International
service DJs still had hitpicks at this time,
although these would be replaced by a Smash Play and station hitpicks at the end of June 1973. In the week commencing
Friday 25 May 1973, when the new hitpicks were
introduced during the Top 30 show, "Give me love (give me peace on
earth)" by George Harrison was Ian Anderson's hitpick,
although in reality Ian had left RNI by this time and this was his final hitpick. A few less
remembered records that I heard on RNI during the week commencing Saturday 26
