The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this period

RNI’s DJ team was stable in June 1973. Ian Anderson had left the International Service in May, but was not replaced. There was, however, additional competition in June 1973 from Radio Caroline, which started a Dutch Service on 259 metres and an English Service on 389 metres at the beginning of June. Several ex-RNI DJs appeared on Caroline this month – Andy Archer, Spangles Muldoon, Roger Day and Michael Lindsay, all of whom had been on RNI in 1970, presented programmes on the English Service and Joost Verhoeven, who was with RNI from mid-1971 to April 1972, was heard on the Dutch Service. By the end of June, however, both Caroline transmitters were off the air and when programmes recommenced from the Mi Amigo in July, it was as Radio Atlantis.

Back on RNI, Driemaster was hosted by Leo van der Goot live from the Mebo 2 in the week that included Saturday 9 June 1973 and, on that Saturday, Driemaster included the Troef 20.

Mike Ross hosted the International Service Top 30 from 20.00 to 22.00 on Friday 8 June 1973, with “Broken down angel” by Nazareth at no. 1. As usual, there were several records in the Top 30 which were not hits in the UK top 50 and these were:

12. Blue – Red light song

22. Rabbit – Broken arrows

24. Neil Christian – That’s nice (this had been a UK hit in 1966, but not on reissue in 1973)

28. Thin Lizzy – Randolph’s Tango

29. Lynsey de Paul – All night

30. Knickerbockers – Lies

By the end of June 1973, the atmosphere on the Dutch Service had changed considerably, following the passing of the Anti-zeezenderwet by the Tweede Kamer on 28 June and the start of the “Radio NoordzeeHou ‘m in de lucht” campaign that the Dutch Service started on Friday 22 June.
