The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this week in June 1973 The International
service of RNI had competition in June 1973 from an all day English service
from Radio Caroline, which featured a number of RNI's DJs from 1970 and
sounded a lot like RNI did in 1970. Former RNI DJs featured were Andy Archer,
Spangles Muldoon, Roger Day and Michael Lindsay, mostly on taped programmes. RNI's
International service at the time had Mike Ross, who had been on RNI in 1970,
although only towards the end, and Brian McKenzie, Don Allen, Arnold Layne
and Graham Gill. Graham Gill had presented the International Top 30 show on
Friday 15 June 1973, which set the playlist for the coming week. It was a
noteworthy week for two reasons. Firstly there was very little movement in
the Top 30, with the biggest climbers going up only eight places - Gladys
Knight and the Pips' "Neither one of us" to no. 12 and Neil
Christian's "That's nice" to no. 16 - and the highest of only two
new entries - "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group - at no. 29.
The week was also noteworthy as the last week in which the International
service DJs had hitpicks. From 22 June 1973 the
International service had a Smash Play and, shortly thereafter, a number of
records that were played as station hitpicks each
week. Friday 22 June
1973 was a very important day for the Dutch service, as it saw the start of
the "Radio Noordzee hou'm
in de lucht" campaign. All of the Dutch DJs
were on board and the programme schedule was: 6.00 Gerard Smit 9.00 Leo van der Goot 10.00 Peter Holland 12.00 Tony Berk 14.00 Ferry Maat 16.00 Leo van der Goot 18.00 - 20.00 Nico Steenbergen The campaign
song, "Geef ons een kans" by Het Noordzee Koor, was played
regularly throughout the day. The Djs stayed on board throughout the next
week whilst the Dutch parliament debated and passed the Anti-Zeezender Wet, although Gerard Smit
and Leo van der Goot were
replaced by Marc van Amstel and Dick de Graaf in the week, as was usual at this time, for their
week on Buitengaats and Driemaster
respectively. |
