The RNI memories
of Michael Downing for this week in June 1973 30 June was the second Saturday in 1973
that RNI was the only offshore station to broadcast a hitparade.
Radio Veronica did not broadcast either the Top 40 or Tipparade
that day, following the passing of the Anti-Zeezender
Wet by De Tweede Kamer on
Thursday 28 June 1973, instead playing every Alarmschijf
from 1969 to 1973 over the weekend. On RNI, the programming on the Dutch
service was, of course, heavily affected by the events of 28 June, with the
"Radio Noordzee, hou
'm in de lucht" campaign having started on
Friday 22 June 1973 and programmes being live, with
all the studio-based DJs (Ferry Maat, Tony Berk, Peter Holland and Nico Steenbergen) on board the Mebo
2, The "Hou 'm in de lucht"
campaign took up so much programme time that the
Super Hit 50 show lasted longer than its usual 3 hours on 30 June 1973, with
Tony Berk taking over from Ferry Maat after the first 3 hours at 15,00. Dick de Graaf was on board that week presenting Driemaster and therefore hosted the Troef
20 on 30 June. The "Hou
'm in de lucht" campaign record, "Geef ons een
kans" by Het Noordzee
Koor had been played a lot on RNI over the previous
week and entered the Top 50 on 30 June. I remember buying a copy of this
record in the summer of 1973. One of the free radio organisations
in the UK organised a march to the Dutch Embassy in
London to hand in a protest against the passing of the Anti-Zeezender Wet, which took place one Sunday in the summer
of 1973. As we walked through the streets of London, there were a couple of
people amongst the marchers selling offshore radio related merchandise and
one had copies of the RNI single. A good purchase, as it also had RNI jingles on
the B-side. Sadly, our protest march had no effect on the progress of the
Anti-Zeezender Wet, although that wasn't really a
surprise - if the tens of thousands of people that protested in Den Haag on
18 April 1973 had no effect, what hope did a couple of hundred of us in
London have of changing Minister van Doorn's mind? On the International service, Mike Ross
presented the Top 30 show on Friday 29 June 1973. Slade entered at number 1
with "Skweeze me pleeze
me". By the end of June 1973 the International service's Top 30 was very
much based on the official UK chart, with only "Seven little girls"
by Peaches at number 28 not making the UK Top 50. Smash Play was "Man of
renown" by Writing on the Wall and the LP of the Week was "Show
your hand" by the Average White Band, a couple of years before they
became really popular. |
