The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this week in July 1973 RNI had some new
competition in the second half of July 1973, as Radio Atlantis started broadcasting
from the Mi Amigo on 15 July 1973 with a very strong signal on 259 metres. But it was business as usual on RNI's Dutch
service, with the programme schedule during the
week being: 6.00 Buitengaats
(live from the Mebo 2, presented by Marc van Amstel or Gerard Smit) 9.00 Branding (Non-stop) 10.00 Peter Holland 12.00 Tony Berk 14.00 Ferry Maat 16.00 Driemaster
(live from the Mebo 2, presented by Leo van der Goot or Dick de Graaf) 18.00 - 20.00 Nico
Steenbergen Newsreaders at the
time were the four DJs who presented the live programmes,
plus Hans ten Hooge and Hans Molenaar,
both of whom presented programmes occasionally. The International
service lost Arnold Layne at about this time, reportedly after an argument
with Mike Ross. This left the International service short of DJs and, by
early August, Rob Eden would be back on board whilst a permanent replacement
was found for Arnold. Mike Ross was the
presenter of the International Top 30 show on Friday 20 July 1973 from 20.00
to 22.00 and the Top 30 was, by now, heavily based on the UK chart. This
meant, however, that the International service was playing a lot of records
that were rarely, if ever, played on the Dutch service, such as
"Gaye" by Clifford T Ward at no. 8, "Step by step" by Joe
Simon at no. 10, "Finders keepers" by Chairmen of the Board at no.
19 and "Honaloochie Boogie" by Mott the Hoople at no. 20. The Smash Play for the week was
"Clouds" by David Gates and the station hitpicks
included "Say has anybody seen my sweet gypsy Rose" by Dawn and
"Woman across the river" by Freddie King. The weekend programmes on RNI at this time included, as ever, the
Super Top 50 with Ferry Maat, plus the Hitback Show with Mike Ross, often accompanied by his
wife Sheila, the Country'n'Western Jamboree with
Don Allen and, on the Dutch service on Sundays, the Dik
voor Mekaar show with
Andre van Duin. The Troef
20, was broadcast in Driemaster
on Saturday and on 21 July 1973 was presented by Leo van der
Goot, who was in his week of Driemaster
at the time. Normally at this time, the Dutch DJs on board the Mebo 2 changed on Tuesday, with the Buitengaats
and Driemaster presenters doing one week on board
and one week on shore leave. |
