The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this week in August 1973 At the beginning
of August 1973 RNI's International service was short of DJs as a result of
the departure of Arnold Layne, so Rob Eden came out to the Mebo 2 to help out until a new DJ was recruited. That new
DJ would be Robin Banks, who had worked on Radio Caroline earlier in 1973,
but who presented programmes of a type which were
not in keeping with the programmes which were being
broadcast from the Mi Amigo by August 1973. By this time the English programmes on the Mi Amigo were from Radio Seagull, whose
format was a lot different from the Top 40 format which Radio Caroline
International had had on 389 metres in June 1973.
So Robin, who had broadcast on Radio Caroline as Robin Adcroft,
fitted better on RNI at this time. Rob Eden made the first promo for Robin,
which went "Robbing banks has never been much fun, but now Robin Banks
can be fun......." On the Dutch
service, there was little change, with the main schedule being: 6.00 Buitengaats
(live from the Mebo 2 with Marc van Amstel or Gerard Smit) 9.00 Branding (Non-stop) 10.00 Peter Holland 12.00 Tony Berk 14.00 Ferry Maat 16.00 Driemaster
(live from the Mebo 2 with Leo van der Goot or Dick de Graaf) 18.00 - 20.00 Nico
Steenbergen But changes were
just around the corner. Peter Holland and Gerard Smit
fell out of favour with programme
director John de Mol and were demoted, with Peter having only regular programmes at the weekend, as well as covering for other Djs whilst they were on holiday, whilst Gerard went back
to being only a newsreader, his place on Buitengaats
taken over by Hans Molenaar. Peter would leave RNI
early in November 1973, but Gerard remained and eventually became one of the
regular hosts of Buitengaats again in the spring of
1974. Dick de Graaf was on board the Mebo 2
on 11 August 1973 and therefore presented the Troef
20 on that Saturday. Mike Ross presented the International service Top 30 on
Friday 10 August 1973. |
