The RNI memories
of Michael Downing for this period in 1974 The Dutch service of RNI had by now
settled into what was its final programme schedule,
which from Monday to Friday was: 6.00 Dick de Graaf 9.00 John de Mol Jnr (Branding) 10.00 Ted Bouwens 12.00 Tony Berk 14.00 Ferry Maat 16.00 Leo van der Goot 18.00 - 20.00 Eric Post, Marc van Amstel or Gerard Smit (Buitengaats, live from the Mebo
2) The only change between the end of April
1974 and the end of August 1974 is that Marc van Amstel
went on land to become the relief DJ covering holidays and other days off for
the regular presenters. In the week commencing 27 April 1974, he fulfilled
both roles, filling in for Ted Bouwens and
presenting Buitengaats, including the Troef 20 on Saturday evening. The International service was still Don
Allen, Brian McKenzie, Graham Gill, Robin Banks, Roger Kent and occasional programmes from Rob Eden, mainly the Contemporary Music
show early on Monday morning, but both Graham Gill and Rob Eden had left to
join Radio Caroline by the end of May. Don Allen presented the Toppers 20 show
from 18.00 to 20.00 on Friday 26 April 1974, which had Abba's
"Waterloo" at no. 1 and "Year of Decision" by the Three
Degrees at no. 5, the latter a record that was much played by RNI at the
time, often with a comment from the DJ that 1974 was the year of decision for
RNI, with the introduction of the Anti-Zeezender
Wet now expected to be only a few months away. The International service's
Top 10 LPs included the latest LPs from Eno, Kayak,
Esperanto and Richard and Linda Thompson, so, although RNI is remembered as a
Top 40 station, it played a lot of music on the International service in 1974
that was not typical Top 40 material. |
