in the backrow of the movies.

The RNI memories
of Michael Downing for this period July 1974 was the penultimate month of
RNI’s existence and saw the final change in the International service DJ
team. Jason Wolfe had joined at the very end of May 1974, but his
presentation style was apparently not liked by Edwin Bollier,
so he left the station and was replaced by Bob Noakes,
who had been on Radio Caroline up to that point. Roger Kent was the presenter of the
Toppers 20 show from 20.00 to 22.00 on Friday 26 July 1974. Wings were at no.
1 with “Band on the run” and there were notable records at no.15 (a version
of “Ring ring” by Abba to which additional instrumental backing had been
added in the hope of getting a UK hit) and no.9 (T Rex with “Light of love”,
a minor hit in the UK – no.22 was its peak position – which indicated how far
T Rex had fallen in popularity since their heyday in 1971/72). The Smash Play on the International
service was “Wild night” by Martha Reeves, now on MCA rather than Tamla Motown. The International service was still running
its Top 10 albums (in no particular order) which were featured throughout the
week’s programmes. This week’s Top 10 included LPs
which have now long been forgotten by Blue (“Life in the navy”), Vigrass & Osborne (“Stepping out”) and the Groundhogs
(“Solid”) as well as “Everyone is everybody else” by Barclay James Harvest
and better remembered albums by Bryan Ferry (“Another time another place”)
and Eric Clapton (“461 Ocean Boulevard”). On the Dutch service Marc van Amstel presented the Troef 20.
Marc had become the regular presenter of the Troef
20 over the past couple of months, but 27 July 1974 was the final time that
he presented it. Ferry Maat presented the Super Top
50 as usual. |
