The RNI memories
of Michael Downing for this week in 1974 The week commencing Saturday 17 August
1974 was RNI's penultimate week and the last full week of regular programmes,
as the final week saw all of the Dutch DJs presenting live from on board the
Mebo 2 for the final few days of broadcasting. In the week commencing 17
August 1974, however, only Buitengaats, from 18.00
to 20.00, was live, but there were a number of different presenters during
the week, including Gerard Smit, Herman de Bruin
and Gerard Reitsma. The Super Top 50 on Saturday 17 August
1974 was four hours long, from 12.00 to 16.00, with Ferry Maat
presenting, but interrupted by an edition of Prijs Bewust with Tony Berk at 13.00.
Later in the day the Troef 20 was presented by
Gerard Smit. The International service team by now
consisted of Don Allen, Brian McKenzie, Robin Banks, Roger Kent and Bob Noakes. Bob Noakes had taken
over the RNI Request Show from Jason Wolfe from 22.00 to 24.00 on Sunday
evenings. Roger Kent presented the penultimate
Toppers 20 show from 20.00 to 22.00 on Friday 16 August 1974, which had
"Mr Soft" by Cockney Rebel as the highest
new entry at No. 8. "Another Saturday Night" by Cat Stevens was the
penultimate Smash Play and the featured Top 10 LPs included the latest LPs by
Stevie Wonder, Wizzard, Bad Company, Chicago, Marvin
Gaye and Barclay James Harvest. The International service thought that it
would continue in the Mediterranean as Radio Nova International and this was
mentioned a number of times by the DJs, although it was not clear how soon
after the close down on 31 August 1974 the move to the Mediterranean would
take place. As we all know now, it took almost three years and broadcasts,
when they did resume in 1977, only consisted of a few tests on shortwave. |
