The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this period

My notes are a bit different this week as it was the only week in the 1971 to 1974 period that I did not hear RNI:

I was on holiday in the Italian part of Switzerland in the week commencing 31 July 1971 and RNI's medium wave signal at the time did not penetrate through the Alps, so I did not hear the station. When I returned on 9 August 1971 quite a lot had changed.

Firstly the Dutch service had extended by two hours from 16.00 to 18.00 and the new programme was broadcast live from the Mebo 2 and called Driemaster, presented by the newsreaders. Initially the Driemaster team was Hans ten Hooge, Leo van der Goot and Joost Verhoeven, but by the end of August 1971 Joost Verhoeven had moved onto land to replace Jan Van Veen, who had not been heard on RNI since July, but continued to have a Kanskaart until the week of 14 August 1971. By that time, however, his morning programme was being presented temporarily by Willem Jaap van der Laan, but he was soon replaced by Joost Verhoeven.

Joost den Draaier went to Japan with Shocking Blue and his programme from 12.00 to 14.00 was presented in his absence by Joost Verhoeven. Joost den Draaier was back on 14 August 1971 for the Super Top 50 show.

The International service also saw some significant changes at this time. Both Alan West and Stevi Merike left. The story is that they wanted to spend more time with their wives and therefore asked to record their programmes on land, but this was refused, so they left. With the introduction of Driemaster, the International service now ran from 18.00 to 3.00 and the standard programmes were:

 18.00 Mark Stuart

 20.00 Crispian St John

 22.00 Mike Ross

 24.00 - 3.00 Dave Rogers

This schedule only lasted a couple of weeks though, before Mike Ross and Crispian St John changed shows.

The changes also meant that the International service stopped broadcasting the Super Hit 50 on Sundays, so the only way to hear the Top 50 in its entirety was on Saturday from 12.00 to 15.00 in the Dutch service with Joost den Draaier. On Sunday 22 August 1971 the International service would introduce its own chart - the British Top 20 - but before that there was a special Top 50 on 15 August 1971, which was a Top 50 compiled from all of the Top 50s since RNI started broadcasting again in February 1971.

One of the Smash Plays in the week commencing 31 July 1971 was "Melting Pot" by Booker T and the MGs, which was infamous as the record that Alan West was playing when the bomb exploded on the Mebo 2 on Saturday 15 May 1971. Interesting that it took two and a half months to become a Smash Play.
