overbekende Long haired lover from Liverpool van Little Jimmy Osmond is deze
December 1972. |

The RNI memories of
Michael Downing for 1972 As 30 December was the last Saturday of
1972, it seems like a good idea to review the most important events
surrounding RNI in that year. In many ways 1972 was RNI’s most successful
year. 1972 began with the Dutch service DJ team
comprising Joost de Draaier,
Ferry Maat, Peter Holland, Joost
Verhoeven and Tony Berk,
plus the three newsreaders/Driemaster DJs Hans ten Hooge, Leo van der Goot and Nico Steenbergen. The International service team was Dave
Rogers, Mike Ross, Paul May, Rob Eden, Brian McKenzie and Terry Davis. The first change happened at the
beginning of February, when Paul May, now programme
controller of the International service, sacked Dave Rogers and Mike Ross
from the DJ team. Mike Ross did, however, stay on as a transmitter engineer
and presented occasional Skyline programmes in the
early morning at weekends. Their replacements were Tony Allan and Barry
Martin. Tony was well known to RNI listeners in 1971 and soon arrived back on
board the Mebo 2. Barry Martin, however, never
broadcast, despite having a hitpick every week
through to the beginning of April. Joost
de Draaier left RNI in March and his lunchtime show
was taken over by Tony Berk. In April a new
International service DJ was announced – Roger Scott. However, when he arrived
on board the Mebo 2 he decided to broadcast under a
different name, Arnold Layne. Also in April, Joost Verhoeven left and was replaced by Alfred Lagarde, who initially broadcast between 9.00 and 11.00
on weekdays in a programme called Espresso. Finally April saw a new addition to the on
board news team, Gerard Smit, who would present a
variety of programmes (most notably Buitengaats) and stay with RNI until the end on 31 August
1974. There were no further changes until July,
when Jos Kuijer joined
the Dutch newsreader team on 26 July. Paul May presented his final programme on 29 July, after whivh
he left on the tender feeling ill and never returned. His replacement was the
man that he had sacked, Dave Rogers, who returned to the Mebo
2 on 15 August 1972. Also in August, Marc van Amstel
joined on 1 August and Hans Molenaar joined on 22
August. Rob Eden presented his last show on 23 August before leaving the
station, although he was to return later in the year. On 14 September an old name returned to
RNI – Spangles Muldoon. His stay was to be very short lived, however, and he
broadcast his final show on 18 September, before leaving to join the Radio
Caroline organisation, which had recently managed
to get the Mi Amigo back out to sea and would start broadcasting test
transmissions in September, although it would be December before a full programme schedule was heard from the Mi Amigo, initially
as Radio 199. On 30 September Radio Veronica moved from
192m to 538m and, within seconds of the final broadcast from Veronica on 192m
ending at 12.30, RNI came on the air as RNI 2 with English programmes until 19.00, when the International service
began on 220m. RNI 2 would not last very long, as, after a few minutes in the
morning on 1 October, the service was discontinued. Around this time Dick de Graaf joined the RNI team as a newsreader, but would soon
be presenting programmes after John de Mol closed
the International service on 24 October. For 10 days RNI broadcast entirely
in Dutch, but the owners of RNI were not happy with the evening programmes and reinstated the International service on 3
November, with Mike Ross, Brian McKenzie and Don Allen. Tony Allan, Terry
Davis and Dave Rogers would not broadcast on RNI again, although all of them
would present programmes on other offshore
stations. There were new Sunday programmes on the
Dutch service, including a programme presented by Henny Spijker, although this
did not last long. RNI was short of International service
DJs in this period, so Steve Berry, one of the engineers, presented some programmes and Rob Eden returned temporarily with two
tours of duty in December. Arnold Layne rejoined in mid-December and, at the
same time, Mark Slate made his first appearance on the station. Ian Anderson
also made his first appearance on RNI on the World service on 10 December,
but did not present programmes regularly until
1973. The International service Top 100 of 1972
was broadcast from 24.00 to 6.00 on 26 December with Rob Eden (24.00 – 2.00),
Brian McKenzie (2.00 – 4.00) and Mark Slate (4.00 – 6.00) and the Dutch
service Top 100 was on the same day from 12.00 to 18.00 with an hour each
presented by Peter Holland, Nico Steenbergen, Leo van der Goot, Alfred Lagarde, Tony Berk and Ferry Maat. Finally, for people who would like to
know what new records were played on RNI right at the end of 1972, these are
the ones that I noted down as having heard for the first time during the week
commencing 30 December 1972:
