The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this week in January 1973 During the autumn
of 1972, the Dutch service of RNI had comprised more or less exclusively
taped programmes, but, at the beginning of 1973, the live programmes made a
comeback. The breakfast programme, which had been known as Ochtendeditie
in 1972, became Buitengaats in early 1973 and was
presented on alternate weeks by Gerard Smit or Marc
van Amstel, depending on who was on board the Mebo 2 at the time. Driemaster returned to its best remembered time of 16.00 to
18.00 and was presented by Leo van der Goot or Alfred Lagarde. The
weekday Dutch service schedule in January 1973 was: 6.00 Buitengaats 9.00 Non-stop 10.00 Peter Holland 12.00 Tony Berk 14.00 Ferry Maat 16.00 Driemaster 18.00 - 20.00 Nico
Steenbergen Both Vader
Abraham and Andre van Duin made programmes
on Sunday. The International
service had Mike Ross, Brian McKenzie and Mark Slate on board for most of the
week commencing 13 January 1973 and Mike Ross presented the International Top
30 on Friday 12 January 1973. This was an interesting month for the Top 30,
as there were a lot of records in the chart which were not UK hits, but are
well remembered from being played on RNI. These included a number that were
in the Dutch service's Super Top 50 (or soon would be), such as the Hollies, Doobie Brothers, Hurricane Smith, Don McLean, the O'Jays and Dr Hook and the Medicine Show, but also some
that were neither hits in Holland nor the UK, such as:
As 1973 went on, the
International Top 30 would be increasingly based on the UK chart, but, in
January 1973, it was still an eclectic mix of hits from the UK, Holland and
the US, plus a few that were not hits anywhere. |
